Moroccan Heritage

We will talk about the sfifa, ekad and other elements that distinguish the moroccan kaftan.

Tarz

Tarz (embroidery) and especially zwak maalem is the elaborate, often gold or silk embroidery that decorates chest panels, cuffs, hem, and sometimes the belt. It is a big part of what makes a caftan feel “royal”.

Sfifa

Sfifa is the braided trim that runs along the edges of the caftan: front opening, neckline, sleeve edges, sometimes hem and side slits.

It is usually made from silk or metallic threads, often in a contrast color, and is a key visual signature of Moroccan tailoring

Aakad

Aakad are the small woven buttons that run along the front opening of the caftan. They can be purely functional or also decorative (extra rows at chest or cuffs).
